Using a rubric to evaluate student participation

Many faculty members wish to reward students for class participation; however, devising criteria for evaluation can be difficult. One way to make grading class participation easier is to develop a participation rubric that can be shared with the students in the course outline.   

The following rubric outlines the criteria upon which students’ class participation might be evaluated, as well as the expectations that students will contribute constructively to the discussion.  It can be adapted to suit your needs.  Next week's tip will provide a more objective way of rewarding attendance and participation.

Rationale:

Outlining standards of performance hopefully will make the ways in which participation points can be earned clearer for students. The rubric above emphasizes preparation and positive impact.  Faculty members might wish to adapt the scheme to include other factors that affect grading.
