All teaching faculty members are invited to the second offering of “The Teaching Square” at CBU.  After a successful pilot project in the fall semester (2009), the Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC)  is coordinating this professional development opportunity.

The square begins with four faculty members.  They meet to make arrangements, then visit each other’s classrooms in a non-evaluative capacity, at a mutually convenient time.

The central question for the square participants is “what can I learn from another faculty member that can inform my own teaching?” In this way, faculty allow themselves to be inspired by each other’s methods, as they think about how to incorporate new ideas into their own teaching.  For this reason, teaching square members likely would come from different disciplines with different styles. The main ingredients are openness to new ideas and a willingness to think about one’s own teaching.

It is important to know that the visitors are not going to critique the person teaching the class; the square provides an opportunity for self-reflection through the observation of others’ teaching.

There will be up to nine (9) spaces for faculty to join a teaching square this term.  Faculty may sign up on a first-come, first-served basis.  Each teaching square this term will involve one of the pilot participants.

All four participants in the pilot project thought it was an invaluable experience and highly recommend it.

If you are interested in signing up, or for more information, please contact Peter MacIntyre, Faculty Liaison for Teaching (peter_macintyre@cbu.ca, phone ext. 1315) as soon as possible.
